Hall No.23 of squares with an area of 3500 square meters is located in the central Fruit and Leek Bar square of Isfahan. This hall is currently the largest fish and shrimp distribution center in Isfahan. The structure in question is a steel frame. This structure has faced serious issues such as execution defects, corrosion problems, and the occurrence of vibrations under the wind load. Today, more than 25 years after the construction of this complex, the structural problems of the mentioned hall have become more obvious and the vibration during strong winds has increased. Some of the main problems in this structure are corrosion of joints and bolts, corrosion of various elements, executive defects, cracks in the concrete enclosing the columns, the effects of slight subsidence, and inconsistency of the structure made with the executive drawings.

Challenges

Lack of consistency between the drawings and the executed condition, corrosion of structural members, structural problems of the shed’s roof, lack of cross-connection between the two frames, low capacity in some members, poor connections in the structure, the bearing capacity problem in the foundation, problems of water leakage into the foundation soil. Corrosion in the drainage paths is one of the main problems of this steel structure and due to the fact that this hall is a place where a lot of sellers and buyers commute, it is not safe enough, and therefore not paying attention to this structure’s problems can cause financial and human losses.

Solutions

After checking the non-compliance of the mentioned structure with its executive drawings and removing the damages, non-destructive corrosion tests, measuring soil strength under the foundation, weld inspection, base metal thickness measurement and paint and coating inspection were performed, and after modeling the necessary measures were taken to eliminate the defects and problems of the mentioned structure. These measures include rust removal of corroded parts and using GFRP anti-corrosion coating for them, installation of braces and struts in the required places, installation of strengthening plates and braces for members with low capacity and modification of joints with poor resistance, strengthening the bearing capacity of the foundation by planting bars and additional foundation, creation of geomembrane waterproofing for floors and modification of drainage paths using a galvanized plate with GFRP coating.

Results

By performing corrective solutions and retrofitting, including strengthening members and joints, creating corrosion coating for members, modification of drainage paths, strengthening the foundation and insulation of floor surfaces, the lifespan of this structure has increased to an acceptable level and the structure is protected against environmental conditions and various destructive factors.
